World of Warcraft – How to Get the Kirin Tor Familiar Non-Combat Vanity Pet Companion

One day in Dalaran, I saw somebody with a rare and absolutely adorable companion pet that looks like an ice-blue, smaller version of the Voidwalker.

By putting my mouse over the vanity pet, I managed to read its name, so that I could learn more about it. It was called the Kirin Tor Familiar.

All you have to do to acquire this special companion is to find and read eight books that spawn in Dalaran. That doesn’t sound so hard, does it?

Get Higher Learning Achievement

The eight books you have to find and read are all parts of the achievement called “Higher Learning”. Not only do you get the achievement but, as a reward, you’ll also receive a book. Then, by using this book, you can obtain the Kirin Tor Familiar.

A friend of mine showed me in game where the eight books would spawn and, each time I was in Dalaran, I made the trip around to check for these particular books.

The tricky thing about the books is that they only appear every 3-4 hours and, if somebody reads the book, it will only be visible for three minutes. If the book is not read, it will be visible for five minutes, and then disappear again.

Fake books will appear randomly in the same places, but they will not form part of the achievement.

The Route around Dalaran to Find the Eight Books

Since my main character is from the Alliance, I started my route with the first place I came to, after I turned right outside the inn.

You should enter the Dalaran Visitor Center and, immediately to the right beside a table, and in front of the right chair, a book can spawn on the floor. Read it if it’s called “The Schools of Arcane Magic – Abjuration”.

Then you go out again, continue left, cross the street and enter the Violet Hold. Turn left and, at the end, you’ll see some boxes. A book can spawn on the box in the corner. If the book’s name is “The Schools of Arcane Magic – Illusion”, you have the correct one.

Leave the Violet Hold, turn right, cross the street, and go inside the Violet Gate. Look to the right on the floor near a bookshelf and, if there’s a book called “The Schools of Arcane Magic – Introduction” there, then read it.

Next stop is the Legerdemain Lounge. Inside, and to the right of the bar, you will see some bookshelves. The right one is usually empty, except when this particular book is there – “The Schools of Arcane Magic – Transmutation”. Read it when you find it.

Go upstairs and, in the second room to the right, there’s a bookshelf beside two chests. This bookshelf will usually appear empty, unless a book has spawned. Hope that it’s “The Schools of Arcane Magic – Necromancy”.

Outside again, continue left, cross the street, and go upstairs to the Violet Citadel. On the first floor, you should check the bookshelves to the right. The book will spawn on the left of the two bookshelves at the bottom beside the other books. This particular book should be “The Schools of Arcane Magic – Conjuration”.

Climb further upstairs, and turn left. Look for “The Schools of Arcane Magic – Divination” on the floor between the two bookshelves.

Then go outside again, stop at the top of the stairs, and study the balcony of the house on the opposite site of the road. Put your mouse over the boxes on the left and, if you see the name “The Schools of Arcane Magic – Enchantment” appear, run over there to “The Threads of Fate”, climb up the stairs and go out onto the balcony, and then read the book.

The Final Steps to get the Kirin Tor Familiar

When you have found and read the eight books, you’ll receive a mail with a book called “The Schools of Arcane Magic – Mastery”. If you right click it, you’ll be transported to a library in one of the tallest spires of Dalaran. There’s a man in there and, if you talk to him, he’ll give you the pet.

Using Webkinz Pets in the Classroom – Turning Toys Into Tools – Teaching With Technology

Have you ever stood in front of your class presenting an action-filled lesson only to feel like your students were more interested in their toys and life outside of school?

So often the aspects of life that excite children the most are banned or excluded from the school curriculum. What would happen to our classrooms and the engagement levels of our students if we turn toys into learning tools? When I look inside the bags my daughters carry around with them everywhere I see their digital camera, Nintendo DS, phone, Webkinz pets, and an iPod. This made me ponder this idea: what if I could harness the enthusiasm kids have for their toys and turn them into learning tools?

As I was listening to my daughters play online one day I realized that the games they were playing weren’t all arcade games but many are educational! Imagine that! Kids are raving about something that is actually educational too! I knew I needed to find out more.

If you aren’t familiar with Webkinz pets, they are stuffed animals that come with an access code attached. You visit the Webkinz webpage and adopt your pet which gives you a virtual, animated pet identical to your stuffed animal. You must care for the health, hunger, and happiness of your pets. Within the world of Webkinz there is an extensive economy built around KinzCash. With the Kinzcash you earn from playing games you can purchase all kinds of items along with the food that your pet requires. If you aren’t familiar with the world of Webkinz, ask any eight to ten-year-old child to give you a guided tour. Children are experts and usually very excited to teach something to an adult.

So I started asking kids what they would think about participating in some Webkinz-based activities during school. The faces of children were lighting up around me (which is every educator’s desire, right?) and this clearly showed me that students would be excited to learn through these activities.

I began to create activities based on the world of Webkinz. Many of the activities could be utilized during literacy work stations. Whether children are building words in Quizzy’s Word World, answering questions in Quizzy’s Questions, creating a play with their pets, practicing math facts and typing, graphing their pet’s hunger, growing plants in their gardens, mapping their house, or keeping track of their kinzcash, they would be learning!

Adopting classroom pets is an excellent way to begin using Webkinz pets in your classroom. In many cases, you will find that almost every child in your class probably has at least one Webkinz pet of their own. I have surveyed class after class of children and it is not easy to find a child that doesn’t have at least one pet until you reach some sixth grade boys. Even then, the activities are good for that age group and beyond, so you may need a couple pets with unique logins for those students to use. I’ve even heard of high-school classes using Quizzy’s Questions and Quizzy’s Word World.

Amazingly, there are many adults who find themselves addicted to the world of Webkinz. So, if this is possible, there must be activities to engage students of all ages. I have played many of the games and can’t even come close to the high scores, indicating to me that there are more than just children playing! I wonder if these adults have the stuffed animal sitting on their lap while they play like my daughters often do!

How will it change your enthusiasm for teaching if your students are eagerly awaiting the start of every school day?

Pet Strollers in the Morning

Our pets are our young children; at least most of us pet lovers believe this. Just as young children constantly need our attention and cannot be left alone in the house, pet parents believe the same is true with pets – cats or dogs.

A pet parent day begins with breakfast. Next comes an outing, either to school with the “real” children or to do errands of some sort. If the school is nearby the children get their coats on while the pet is put in his pet stroller. Then everyone walks to school. (At first, some people might ask whether there has been a new baby added to the family!) For sure, a lot of fuss will be made over the pet, and the stroller! The children love this attention and will want to walk the pet to school every day. Other mothers are usually envious and ask where they can find a pet stroller.

If the school is some distance away, or school is not on the agenda, the pet parent loads the pet stroller body (pet inside) into the car. The stroller wheels collapse easily and go in the trunk. Now pet and parent can go shopping, attend a doctor’s appointment, do some errands, walk in the park or meet a friend for lunch.

In a world without pet strollers, all this long morning the pet would have been home alone lazily wandering around or sleeping. Research tells us that pets usually sleep when left unattended in a house for long periods. Then when you get home they want to be taken out, when all you want to do is sit down and have a cup of coffee.

This scene illustrates how owning a pet stroller changes, and improves, the family dynamic. A potentially dreary day gets off to a good start. After breakfast, excitement is in the air. Everyone is going out together – pet and all! This is new, this is convenient, this is cutting edge, this is the future of pet owning.

Furthermore, the events above cover just a typical regular morning. There’s still an afternoon full of opportunities and an evening when everyone can go out together again. Imagine for a moment where you and your pet and your family and friends could go together, if only you had a pet stroller! Pet stores don’t yet sell many, so look to the internet to choose one. http://petstrollerdepot.com has a good selection.
